Past Localhost

Douglas Matoso

A text guide for developers who already write code and want their software to hold up in production. The lessons are short (5 to 10 minutes each) and use code and diagrams to show what changes between localhost and a real server. Topics include the path of a request from DNS to the database, where state lives, Git for undoing mistakes, coding with AI assistants and the event loop. The parts build on each other and are meant to be read in order.

What you'll learn

  • Tracing a request from DNS and TLS to the database pool
  • Spotting what a local environment hides
  • Handling state and side effects in a running system
  • Using Git to investigate and undo changes
  • Coding with AI assistants without piling up technical debt
  • How processes, memory and the event loop behave at runtime
